Common Terms in South African Cooking
Term Description
Braai The South African term for barbecue. It's a social event and a way of life!
Potjiekos A traditional South African stew cooked in a three-legged cast iron pot over an open fire.
Biltong Air-dried, cured meat similar to beef jerky.
Droëwors A dried sausage, similar to biltong but made with sausage.
Koeksister A traditional Afrikaner confectionery made of fried dough infused in syrup.
Melktert A milk-based custard tart.
Sosatie A traditional South African dish of marinated, cubed meat cooked on skewers.
Rusks A hard, dry biscuit often dunked in coffee or tea.
Samoosa A triangular pastry filled with spiced vegetables or meat, of Indian origin but very popular in South Africa.
Atchar A spicy pickle made from green mangoes, popular especially around Durban.
